Commonly Associated Conditions With Down Syndrome

In addition to the developmental and intellectual disabilities, children who have Down syndrome have risk of certain other health problems also. However, each person with such syndrome is different, as not every individual will suffer from serious health problems. Many of such associated health problems can be treated by medication, surgery and other interventions.

Some of the health problems which kids with the Down syndrome suffer more often are:

Heart defects: Almost 50% of children with such syndrome suffer from hearth diseases like CHD.Vision problems: More than an approximate of 60% of these children are born with vision problems which may include cataract also.Loss of hearing: On an average, 70-75% of such kids suffer from some amount of loss in hearing, which may be due to the ear structure.Infections: Such kids have a higher risk of pneumonia in first year of birth as compared to other children. They should be continuously monitored for even minor infections and their treatment shall be done right away. They should receive all the recommended immunizations that help them to stay healthy.Hypothyroidism: It is a condition when thyroid makes a little or no hormone, it is witnessed more often in these kids, and so taking the thyroid hormone by the mouth can help treat this condition.Blood disorders: These kids are 10-15 times more likely to develop leukemia, anemia and polycythemia than other children. Such conditions may require an additional care with monitoring and proper treatment.Problems with upper part of spine: Children with such syndrome are at a higher risk of spinal injuries due to misshapen bones in upper part of spine. So it should be checked if such problems with spine are present and should be taken care of during surgeries and physical activities of the child.Sleep disorders and disruptive patterns of sleep: Such kids often suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. So a special study should be done on such person's sleeping patterns and proper solutions should be made.Epilepsy: It is a condition which causes seizures; children suffering from Down syndrome are usually at a higher risk to develop epilepsy than other children. Such risk increases with the age of the person. Though such seizures can be controlled and treated by proper medication.Health is an important asset and it should be taken very seriously. Children's health is as important as adult health but adults often get into unhealthy addictions that destroy their life and health. Rate this Article

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - Why Maternal Drinking is a Taboo?

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition which results from maternal exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. The limit of exposure has not yet been determined. However, any woman who drinks during pregnancy puts her child to the risk of developing this disease. This is not a single disease but a collection of symptoms like learning disabilities and affected nervous system, hence commonly known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs).

When mother drinks during pregnancy, the alcohol enters the body and reaches to child through placenta. Since fetus has low metabolizing rate for alcohol, it gets concentrated into its bloodstream. It interferes with oxygen and nutrition supply to baby's developing organs including brain. The damage is severe especially in the first trimester when the organs are not yet fully developed and when the mother may be unaware of her pregnancy.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a common cause of mental retardation in children.

Symptoms:-

Physical deformities like narrowed eyes, underdeveloped limbs and fingersDisoriented physical featuresDelayed physical growthHearing problemsVision difficultiesMicrocephaly- small brain size and head circumferencePoor motor coordinationMental retardationLearning difficultiesHyperactivityHeart defectsExtreme nervousness and anxiety

The facial deformities may also be present in normal children. It requires experience and expertise to differentiate them from those in affected children.

Treatment:-

No treatment is available for fetal alcohol syndrome. Mental retardation and learning difficulties may persist for life. Physical deformities and heart defects can be reduced to some extent by surgery. Special schooling and behavioral counseling will also help.

Prevention:-

Not drinking alcohol before or during pregnancyCompletely giving up alcohol in childbearing yearsSeeking professional help to get rid of alcohol problem.

This disorder is not usually evident before delivery and more time will be taken for diagnosis worsening the situation. If a woman drinks regularly, she should tell this to her gynecologist to assess the risk of infant. If one child is diagnosed with this disease, it is necessary to test his or her siblings for the occurrence of fetal alcohol syndrome.

Doctors are not sure about how much alcohol is to be consumed during pregnancy to put the child at risk. The more is the drinking, higher is the risk to baby. Hence, more or less, any amount of Alcohol consumed during pregnancy or before conception can be fatal to fetus. Therefore, it is recommended that women should avoid drinking if they are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
